The Castle of Wartburg, Germany, the "Patmos" of Luther - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. Wartburg Castle [was] the asylum of Luther from May 4, 1521, to March 6, 1522. Luther was wont to compare Wartburg Castle to the Island of Patmos, to which the wrath of Domitian, in former times, had banished the Apostle John... An hour's walk up the steep ascent brings the visitor to the summit, whence a glorious panorama opens to the view. A sea of rocks and wooded hills in every variety of form undulates around; whilst nearly a thousand feet below Eisenach is faintly discerned, appearing as a pretty little model of a German town - the whole forming as lovely a scene as is to he witnessed in Thuringia...The Duke of Saxe-Weimar has gone to great expense in restoring the principal part of Wartburg Castle to the same state it was in the fifteenth century'. EDITORS COMMENTS
The Castle of Wartburg, Germany, affectionately referred to as 'the Patmos of Luther,' holds a significant place in the annals of religious history. This majestic fortress, depicted in this 1862 sketch, served as a refuge for the renowned German reformer, Martin Luther, from May 4, 1521, to March 6, 1522. During his seclusion at Wartburg, Luther translated the New Testament from Greek into German, an act that played a pivotal role in spreading his ideas and igniting the Protestant Reformation. Luther himself compared his time at Wartburg to the exile of the Apostle John on the Island of Patmos. To reach the castle, one must undertake a challenging ascent, but the effort is rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. The summit offers a view of a 'sea of rocks and wooded hills in every variety of form,' with the quaint town of Eisenach visible nearly a thousand feet below. The Duke of Saxe-Weimar took great strides in restoring the principal part of Wartburg Castle to its fifteenth-century splendor, preserving the historical significance of this remarkable place. The Castle of Wartburg stands as a testament to the rich history of Germany and the enduring influence of Martin Luther's groundbreaking work.
