EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, captured by Underwood & Underwood in the late 19th century, showcases the enchanting Cathedral and Main Street of Queenstown, Ireland. Formerly known as Cobh before Ireland's independence, Queenstown was a town rich in history and architectural marvels. The focal point of this image is the magnificent Cathedral of St Colman, an awe-inspiring Gothic Revival masterpiece that took nearly five decades to complete. Designed by renowned architects EW Pugin, George Ashlin, and Thomas Coleman, this religious sanctuary stood tall against the backdrop of a bustling street scene. Horse-drawn carriages traverse along the road while pedestrians engage in their daily activities amidst charming Victorian-era buildings. The absence of a spire on the cathedral indicates that this photograph predates its construction between 1911 and 1915. The monochrome aesthetic adds a timeless quality to this snapshot from yesteryears. Every detail comes alive through stereoscopic photography techniques employed by Underwood & Underwood. From the intricate rose window adorning the cathedral's facade to each shop window lining Main Street, every element tells a story about life in County Cork during that era. As we gaze upon this remarkable print today, it serves as both a visual testament to Ireland's past and an invitation for us to delve into its rich heritage. It reminds us how architecture can shape our understanding of history while capturing moments frozen in time for generations to come.
