EDITORS COMMENTS
[Caption] This photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of County Down, Ireland, as the Foundation-Stone of a memorial to the late Marquess of Londonderry is laid on Scrabo Hill. The ceremony took place in 1857, and was presided over by Sir Robert Bateson in the presence of a large gathering of the Marquis' tenants and local residents. The memorial, which was to be built in the style of a Scottish chateau, was a tribute to Charles William Vane, the third Marquis of Londonderry. A large glass jar, hermetically sealed, was handed to Sir Robert during the ceremony. It contained a parchment scroll inscribed with the following words: "In memory of Charles William Vane, third Marquis of Londonderry...This tower is erected by his tenantry and friends." The architect declared the stone properly laid, and on this signal, the Union Jack was hoisted on the summit of the hill. A "Royal salute" was fired from a battery of guns to mark the occasion. The monument, which was to stand at a height of 135 feet, was to be built of the rough rubble-stone (basalt) found on the top of the hill. This photograph, taken from "Illustrated London News" in 1857, provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the social and historical context of the time. The ceremony marked a significant moment in the community's history, and the construction of the memorial served as a testament to the Marquis' legacy and the bond between the tenants and their landlord.
