Ceremony of Placing the Guards Crimean Colours in the Chapel of the Wellington Barracks, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Ceremony of Placing the Guards Crimean Colours in the Chapel of the Wellington Barracks, [London], 1857. A special guard was...formed on the parade...with the six colours, headed by the united bands of the three regiments. When it was reported to Lord Rokeby that all was ready the special guard were marched up, led by the field officer commanding the parade, the band clearing the front of the colour escort as they approached the troops, and forming at one side...The company forming the escort halted so as to form the third side of the square of troops in front of the chapel, the ensigns and colour-sergeants marching alone to the steps; on reaching the top of which the colours faced about so as to front the troops on parade, and standing in a cluster under the portico, when, under a Royal salute, followed by three cheers, they were taken into the chapel...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment of great honor and reverence as the Guards' Crimean Colours are brought into the Chapel of the Wellington Barracks in London, following the British victory in the Crimean War. The scene is set on a grand parade ground, with a special guard formed in pristine uniforms, holding aloft the six colours, each bearing the battle honors earned during the conflict. The united bands of the three regiments play a solemn tune, clearing a path for the colour escort as they approach the troops. Upon receiving the signal, the special guard marches forward, the band retreating to the side, allowing the colour party to reach the steps of the chapel. The ensigns and colour-sergeants, bearing the precious colours, ascend the steps and face the troops, who salute in respect and admiration. Under the portico of the chapel, the colours are taken in, marking the end of a long and arduous journey from the battlefield to the hallowed grounds of the barracks. This poignant ceremony was reported in the Illustrated London News in 1857, immortalizing the bravery and dedication of the British military in the face of adversity.
