EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white image depicts the christening of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, later known as King Edward VII, in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on January 25, 1842. The future monarch, dressed in a white christening robe, is held by his father, Prince Albert, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, while Queen Victoria, in her regal attire, looks on approvingly from the side. The scene takes place inside the ornate and grandiose chapel, with its high ceilings, intricate stonework, and stained glass windows, reflecting the strong Christian faith and rich history of the British monarchy. The congregation, comprised of noblemen, ladies-in-waiting, and other dignitaries, are all attentively watching the ceremony, adding to the solemn and reverent atmosphere. The Prince of Wales, who would later become the first emperor of India, is surrounded by the love and support of his family and the British people, as he embarks on his journey towards becoming the King of Great Britain and Ireland. This beautiful and historic moment was immortalized by renowned British painter, Sir George Hayter, and was published in The Graphic, an illustrated weekly newspaper, in 1891.
