EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 19th century oil painting by Joseph-Desire Court depicts the coronation of Christian VIII of Denmark (1786-1848) and his queen, Caroline Amalie of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1796-1881), in Copenhagen's Church of Our Saviour on May 8, 1841. The newly crowned monarch and his queen are shown in their magnificent coronation robes, adorned with rich fabrics, ermine, and gold embroidery. Christian VIII wears the traditional Danish crown, held aloft by an attendant, as well as the sceptre and orb. His robe is a deep blue velvet, trimmed with ermine and gold braid. The baldachin, or canopy, above them is supported by four figures representing the virtues of Denmark: Fortitude, Wisdom, Justice, and Peace. Caroline Amalie's gown is a vibrant red, also trimmed with ermine and gold. Her robe is held open by two court ladies, revealing the intricate gold embroidery on the underskirt. The queen's crown is topped with a ciborium, or canopy, supported by two angels and two lions. The painting captures the grandeur and opulence of the Danish monarchy during this period, as well as the importance of tradition and heritage in Danish culture. The rich colors, intricate details, and lifelike portrayal of the subjects make this a truly captivating work of art.
