Christmas Eve in Devonshire - the Mummers coming in, 1850. Creators: Stockdale, Smyth

Christmas Eve in Devonshire - the Mummers coming in, 1850. Rural entertainment in Devon. And then entered six or seven youths fantastically bedecked with ribbons, and gay, antiquated garments...the play representing the unconquerable of Old England partially attracted the attention of the noisy audience. A warrior, lip corked a la moustache, personating the ambitious Napoleon, is brought to encounter St. George...At the right are seated those whose hunger craves relief, which the farmer's wife is labouring to accord. Facing are they who, with their senses quickened by the juice of apple [ie cider], shout at the valiant heroes...against the chimney, behold the farmer watching to supply the wants of any of his friends. Beneath are placed a group of children, whose minds are wondering at so strange a sight...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

Christmas Eve in Devonshire - the Mummers coming in, 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating image that transports us back in time to a rural English village during the 19th century. The photograph, created by the skilled hand of Smyth and published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the unique and lively tradition of Mumming, a form of rural entertainment that took place during the festive season. The scene is set around a cozy, old-fashioned fireplace, with the warm, inviting glow of the fire casting long shadows on the walls. A group of villagers, both men and women, are gathered around the hearth, their faces illuminated by the flickering firelight. The air is filled with the sounds of laughter, music, and the excited chatter of children. At the heart of the action, six or seven youths, dressed in colorful ribbons and antiquated garments, enter the room. These are the Mummers, who have come to perform their play, which represents the unconquerable spirit of Old England. In the foreground, a warrior, with a lip-corked moustache and dressed as Napoleon, faces St. George, ready for their encounter. To the right, a farmer's wife serves food and drink to those whose hunger craves relief. The farmer himself watches attentively, ready to supply the needs of his friends. Beneath the chimney, a group of children, with wide-eyed wonder, observe the strange and exciting sight before them. The atmosphere is further enhanced by the presence of a barking dog and musical instruments, adding to the lively and festive spirit of the occasion. This engraving, with its rich detail and evocative description, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us to a time when traditions like Mumming brought communities together during the festive season.
