A Church in Petropavlovsk, 1889. Creator: Unknown
A Church in Petropavlovsk, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the stunning image of St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Petropavlovsk, Russia, dating back to the late 19th century. The photograph is believed to have been taken in the 1880s or 1890s, during the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik, which documented the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album from which this photograph originates suggest that it was once part of the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The church, with its distinctive white wooden facade, belfry, and bell tower, stands proudly against a backdrop of a snowy landscape. The picket fence surrounding the church adds to the quaint and picturesque scene. The wooden structure, with its intricate details and painted accents, is a testament to the rich architectural and religious heritage of Russia. Petropavlovsk, also known as Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, is a historic port city located in Kamchatka Krai, Russia. The meeting of frontiers between Europe and Asia is reflected in the diverse cultural and natural landscapes of this region. The photograph provides a glimpse into the past, offering a window into the history and traditions of this fascinating part of the world.
