Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana, Venice, Italy, 1927. Artist: Eugen Poppel
Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana (Customs House) from the Riva degli Schiavoni, Venice, Italy, 1927. In 1630 the Venetian Senate decreed that if the city was delivered from an outbreak of the plague gripping it at the time, a new church would be built and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The result was this Baroque church designed by Baldassare Longhena. Generally referred to as La Salute, it stands on the opposite side of Venices Grand Canal from St Marks Square, at the point where the canal empties into the lagoon. The church was truly Longhenas lifes work, taking 51 years to complete before being inaugurated in 1681, the year before his death. From Italien in Bildern, by Eugen Poppel [August Scherl, Berlin, 1927]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the magnificent Church of Santa Maria della Salute and the Dogana in Venice, Italy. Taken in 1927 by artist Eugen Poppel, it showcases the stunning architecture and picturesque waterfront setting of this iconic Baroque church. The history behind this grand structure is equally fascinating. In 1630, as Venice was plagued by a devastating outbreak, the Venetian Senate made a solemn promise to build a new church dedicated to the Virgin Mary if their city was delivered from disaster. The result was this masterpiece designed by Baldassare Longhena. Known affectionately as La Salute, this architectural gem stands proudly on the opposite side of Venice's Grand Canal from St Mark's Square. It took Longhena an incredible 51 years to complete his life's work before its inauguration in 1681, just one year prior to his passing. In this image, we can see gondolas gracefully gliding along the canal while boats transport people and goods across these historic waters. The dome of Santa Maria della Salute dominates the skyline with its impressive presence. Eugen Poppel skillfully captured not only the physical beauty but also conveyed a sense of tranquility that permeates through every corner of Venice. This monochrome photograph transports us back to early 20th-century Italy, allowing us to appreciate both its rich history and timeless charm.
