"Cinderella" - painted by George Cruikshank - from the Exhibitionn of the Royal Academy, 1854. The admirers of Mr Cruikshank - and he has many, and none warmer than ourselves, have been pleased to see of late that, he has chosen to dwell in fairy land - that he prefers Queen Mab and Cinderella, to Bond-street dandies and the follies of the day. It would be difficult indeed to find a fitter artist to introduce to the Fairy Queen: he really seems to revel in tiny circles, and on mushroom tops, with a Puck-like vivacity and good-will. We engrave a recent instance of his skill in embodying nursery stories'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Cinderella" and painted by the renowned English artist George Cruikshank in 1854, was exhibited at the prestigious Royal Academy. The identity of the creator of this description is unknown, but the admiration for Cruikshank's work was widespread, with none more ardent than the writer of these words. Cruikshank's recent foray into the realm of fairy tales and nursery stories was met with great enthusiasm, as he seemed to bring these magical tales to life with a unique vivacity and good-humored touch. In this painting, Cinderella is depicted in her humble kitchen, surrounded by the trappings of poverty. A cauldron bubbles over the fireplace, while a Dutch door and half door allow a glimpse into the simple, rustic scene. A pumpkin and vegetables lie on the table, while mice and rats scurry about, setting off a mousetrap. The presence of a coach, complete with horses and footmen, suggests the imminent arrival of the prince, but for now, Cinderella remains hidden, her young beauty and poise evident even in her humble surroundings. The fairy godmother, a mythical creature, hovers above, ready to grant Cinderella her wish and transform her rags into a magnificent gown. The print captures the essence of the fairy tale, with its blend of magic, mythology, and the contrast between poverty and wealth. Cruikshank's skillful use of black and white shading and his ability to convey the characters' emotions make this a truly enchanting work of art.
