Citizens of London walking in the Pleasant Pastures of Smethefelde, 1857. Creator: Unknown
Citizens of London walking in the Pleasant Pastures of Smethefelde, 1857. Scene from "Master Walter, the Physician. A Tale of Old London": The Smethefelde was thronged, that afternoon, with groups of citizens, who had brought out their wives and children, to enjoy a walk through the pleasant pastures that skirted Turnmill Brook...Wherever the eye roved over those grassy meadows...it fell upon gay and varied dresses. The more old-fashioned of the citizenesses adhered to the green kirtle, which had been common since the Conquest; but there were many who aped the increasing extravagance of the nobility, and figured in tunics of blue or crimson. Dotted about amongst the gayer dresses of the wealthier citizens, might be seen the russet coats and peaked cowls of the mechanics, and the bliaus (the progenitors of the modern smock frocks) of the agricultural labourers.'. From "Illustrated London News", 1857

This photograph, titled "Citizens of London walking in the Pleasant Pastures of Smethefelde, 1857," transports us back in time to an idyllic scene of leisure and community in Old London. The image, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1857, depicts a bustling crowd of Londoners enjoying a sunny afternoon stroll through the picturesque Smethefelde pastures. The Smethefelde meadows, situated along Turnmill Brook, had long been a popular destination for Londoners seeking respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. In this photograph, we see groups of families and friends, their laughter and chatter blending with the gentle sound of the babbling brook. The diverse attire of the citizens reflects the social fabric of Victorian London. The more traditional citizens, clad in green kirtles, pay homage to the city's rich history, while others adopt the latest fashion trends of the nobility, donning blue and crimson tunics. Amongst the vibrant colors, the russet coats and peaked cowls of the mechanics and the bliaus of the agricultural laborers add a rustic charm to the scene. This photograph, though its creator remains unknown, offers a rare glimpse into the past, allowing us to appreciate the simple pleasures of a bygone era. The Smethefelde pastures, with their picturesque beauty and diverse population, serve as a reminder of the unity and camaraderie that once thrived in the heart of London.
