The City of Bordeaux, 1854. Creator: Edmund Evans
The City of Bordeaux, 1854. Wine-growing in France....in these parts it is within the reach of all purses; the meanest labourer, in fact, can take it at all his meals, and it is from it that he derives great part of his strength....Vines attain their full growth at the age of five years. Many produce the most excellent grapes at this early period, and some have been known to bring forth good fruit even at the age of 150 or 200 years...A person travelling in a wine country for the first time might be surprised if he were told that the hard gravelly soil of Medoc is more valuable than many of the most loamy arable lands; and still more surprised if told that the hardest parts of it were the most precious of all...The gravel acts at once as a sieve to carry away the water from the sinewy roots of the plant, and as an oven to retain the heat of the sun's rays'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled 'The City of Bordeaux, 1854,' transports us back in time to the heart of the renowned wine region in France. The image, created by English photographer and engraver Edmund Evans, showcases the bustling cityscape of Bordeaux, with its winding streets, grand architecture, and the distinctive presence of ox and bullock carts laden with wine barrels. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of the Gironde region in Aquitaine, France, where the production of wine has been an integral part of rural life for centuries. According to an article from the 'Illustrated London News' published in 1854, wine was not only a luxury but also an essential part of the daily diet for even the poorest laborers. The vines in these parts were known to produce excellent grapes as early as their fifth year, with some even bearing fruit for over 150 or 200 years. The hard, gravelly soil of Medoc, which might seem unremarkable to the untrained eye, is, in fact, highly valuable. The gravel acts as a sieve, allowing water to drain away from the vine's roots, while retaining the heat of the sun's rays. This unique combination of factors makes the land ideal for growing grapes, transforming it into a precious resource for the wine industry. This photograph offers a glimpse into the rich history and tradition of winegrowing in Bordeaux, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between the land, the people, and the grapes that have made this region world-renowned for its exceptional wines.
