The Civil War in America: General Stuart (Confederate) with his cavalry... 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Civil War in America: General Stuart (Confederate) with his cavalry scouting in the neighbourhood of Culpepper Courthouse - from a sketch by our special artist, 1862. Our Special Artist in America has sent to us an illustration...showing the Confederate scouting party under General Stuart, skirmishing with a portion of General Pope's army in the neighbourhood of Culpepper Courthouse. General Stuart's fame reached England after his marvellous raid round the extreme right of M'Clellan's army, whilst the latter was threatening Richmond. It is unnecessary to remind our readers of this gallant dash, which will take its place in the history of cavalry tactics. Probably many will be surprised at the rough and worn appearance of the men, especially when they are told that many of the privates are worth from 50, 000 to 100, 000 dollars each. The rudeness of their equipments, consisting mainly of old rusty sabres and shot-guns, is in a great degree owing to the blockade, which shuts them out of the market of good carbines and fine-tempered blades. As it is, they are the finest irregular body of horse in the world'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1862, captures General J.E.B. Stuart and his Confederate cavalry during a scouting mission in the vicinity of Culpepper Courthouse. The image is derived from a sketch by an unidentified special artist for the Illustrated London News. At the time, General Stuart had recently gained international acclaim for his daring raid around the extreme right of Union Army General McClellan's forces, threatening Richmond. The rough and worn appearance of the Confederate soldiers in the photograph may surprise many viewers, especially when considering that some privates were reportedly worth from $50,000 to $100,000 each. The lack of modern weaponry and equipment, such as carbines and fine-tempered blades, was largely due to the Union blockade, which prevented the Confederacy from accessing these essential supplies. Instead, the soldiers relied on old rusty sabres and shotguns. Despite their humble appearances, these men formed the finest irregular body of horse in the world, making significant contributions to the Confederate war effort.
