EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the iconic clock used by the Citizens Savings and Trust Company from 1920 to 2013. Founded in 1904 as the One-Cent Savings and Trust Company Bank by African-American minister and businessman Richard Henry Boyd, this institution played a vital role in meeting the financial needs of African American depositors who felt marginalized by white-owned banks. The large rectangular clock is an exquisite piece of craftsmanship, with a stained glass sign adorning both its front and back. The words "CITIZENS / SAVINGS / BANK / & TRUST CO" are beautifully displayed on these signs, representing not only a bank but also symbolizing hope, empowerment, and economic progress for the black community it served. Constructed primarily of copper metal, this timepiece exudes elegance and durability. Its sides feature intricate vent-like patterns running from top to bottom, adding an industrial touch to its overall design. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time to America's vibrant history during the early 20th century. This image represents more than just a clock; it embodies resilience, cultural heritage, and determination against adversity. Preserved within the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this object serves as a testament to Rev. Dr. Richard Henry Boyd's vision for economic equality within his community. It stands as a reminder that even small deposits can make significant impacts when given proper attention and respect.
