EDITORS COMMENTS
The Colosseum in 1827, (c1876): A Glimpse into London's Past This print takes us back to the year 1827, offering a rare glimpse of The Colosseum in all its grandeur. Located to the east of Regents Park in London, this magnificent structure was built as an exhibition space for Thomas Hornor's Panoramic view of London. Designed by the talented architects Decimus Burton and John Young, it stood as a testament to their architectural prowess. The image showcases the impressive dome of The Colosseum against a backdrop of black and white. It captures the essence of early 19th-century Britain with its Georgian style and monochrome aesthetic. As we observe closely, we can see people scattered around the building - men and women going about their day in this bustling cityscape. Sadly, The Colosseum met its demise in 1874 when it was demolished. However, thanks to this engraving from "Old and New London: A Narrative of Its History" we are able to appreciate its beauty even today. As we delve into history through this aerial view photograph, our imagination is transported back to a time when England was undergoing significant transformations. This print serves as a reminder that while buildings may come and go, they leave behind indelible imprints on our collective memory.
