The Colosseum, Regents Park, London, 1823 (1926)
The Colosseum, Regents Park, London, 1823 (1926). Regents Park Colosseum was a vast, circular exhibition hall with a glazed cupola and a massive portico designed by Decimus Burton (at the time it was the largest building of its kind in the country). It was used for exhibitions and super panoramas, but after a time it went out of fashion as a place of recreation and in 1875 the building was pulled down and Cambridge Gate, a terrace of first class houses, replaced it. The Colosseum, Regents Park, London, 1823 (1926) - A Glimpse into the Past
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This black and white aerial view photograph takes us back to the year 1823 in London's Regents Park. The image showcases a magnificent structure known as the Colosseum - a circular exhibition hall that once stood proudly as one of the largest buildings of its kind in Britain. Designed by Decimus Burton, this futuristic marvel boasted a glazed cupola and an imposing portico. During its heyday, the Colosseum served as a venue for exhibitions and super panoramas, attracting crowds eager to witness technological advancements and artistic wonders. However, changing times eventually led to its decline in popularity as a recreational space. In 1875, Cambridge Gate emerged on the site where this grand building once stood. Published in Apollo magazine in October 1926, this print allows us to appreciate both the architectural prowess of Decimus Burton and glimpse into London's rich history. The monochrome tones evoke nostalgia while emphasizing the intricate details of this lost landmark. As we gaze upon this image from nearly two centuries ago, we are reminded of how cities evolve over time – old structures make way for new ones; yet their legacy lives on through photographs like these that capture moments frozen forever within our collective memory.
