EDITORS COMMENTS
Au Nom De Guynemer...." On the soil where Guynemer took off... 1917." This evocative photograph captures the poignant moment of farewell between General Anthoine, commander of the 1st Army, and the renowned French fighter pilot, Georges Marie Guynemer. The image was taken on the airfield where Guynemer prepared for his final flight during the First World War. Guynemer, a national hero in France, was a celebrated figure in the French Air Force and the armed services. Known for his exceptional flying skills and bravery, he had already achieved remarkable successes in the skies, shooting down an impressive 54 enemy planes. However, on September 11, 1917, Guynemer's luck ran out. As he took off from the airfield, he was tragically shot down and killed in action. This photograph, published in "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" by L'Illustration, Paris, 1924, serves as a poignant tribute to the legendary pilot. The image captures the raw emotion of the moment, with General Anthoine bidding farewell to Guynemer, who was about to embark on his final mission. The black and white print, a testament to the history of the First World War, evokes a sense of nostalgia and respect for the sacrifices made during this pivotal period in world history. The photograph is a powerful reminder of the courage and determination of the soldiers and pilots who fought in the conflict, and the deep impact it had on the world. The image, though unsigned, stands as a valuable historical document, capturing a moment in time that continues to resonate with us today.
