One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor print, titled "Commander Voloshenin's Scouting Expeditions in Semirechye and the Valley of the Ili River in 1771," is one of 21 surviving watercolors from an album chronicling the rich history of the Siberian Cossacks. Created by renowned Russian artist Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, this masterpiece was commissioned as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II in 1891 during his journey back to Saint Petersburg from a trip to the Russian Far East. The album, which originally contained 27 watercolors, showcases the Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the pivotal victory of Hetman Ermak Timofeevich over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing through more than three centuries of Russian history. This particular watercolor depicts the scouting expeditions of Commander Voloshenin in the Semirechye region and the Valley of the Ili River during the late 18th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the painting bring to life the rugged terrain, the Cossack soldiers on horseback, and the sprawling landscape of the Ili Valley. The soldiers are shown scouting the area, likely in search of resources or enemy forces, while their horses wade through the shallow waters of the river. The vast expanse of the valley, surrounded by mountains and forests, is a testament to the vastness and diversity of the Russian Empire during this period. This watercolor is not only a beautiful work of art but also an invaluable historical document, providing a glimpse into the lives of the Cossacks and the exploration of the vast territories that became a part of the Russian Empire. The Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow is fortunate to preserve this and other watercolors from the album, ensuring that future generations can continue to learn from and appreciate the rich history of the Siberian Cossacks.
