Completion of the Pacific Railroad, (1878). Creator: Albert Bobbett
Completion of the Pacific Railroad, (1878). The First Transcontinental Railroad (originally the Pacific Railroad) was the first uninterrupted railway between New York on the Atlantic Ocean, and San Francisco on the Pacific Ocean. It ran via Chicago across nine mountain ranges, and travel from coast to coast was reduced from six months to just one week. The Last Spike ceremony, where the track from the east was joined to its counterparts from the west, took place at Promontory, Utah, on 10 May 1869, in the presence of many hundred people of various nationalities, including some of our dusky barbarian brethren. From " Our Country: a Household History for All Readers, from the Discovery of America to the Present Time", Volume 3, by Benson J. Lossing. [Johnson & Miles, New York, 1878]

Completion of the Pacific Railroad, (1878) - A Historic Milestone in American Transportation
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in American history - the completion of the Pacific Railroad. Created by Albert Bobbett, this image showcases the First Transcontinental Railroad, an engineering marvel that connected New York on the Atlantic Ocean to San Francisco on the Pacific Ocean. The construction of this railway line was no small feat, as it traversed nine mountain ranges and covered vast distances across the country. Prior to its completion, traveling from coast to coast took six arduous months; however, with the introduction of this railroad, it was reduced to just one week. The Last Spike ceremony held at Promontory Summit in Utah on May 10th, 1869 marked a pivotal moment for America's progress. This event brought together people from various nationalities and backgrounds who witnessed history being made. The presence of Native Americans is also mentioned in Benson J. Lossing's book "Our Country: a Household History for All Readers". Albert Bobbett's engraving beautifully captures this historic occasion with precision and detail. It serves as a reminder of how human ingenuity can overcome geographical barriers and unite distant regions. This print not only commemorates an incredible achievement in transportation but also pays homage to all those involved in making it possible - from engineers and laborers to indigenous communities whose lands were traversed during its construction. It stands as a testament to America's relentless pursuit of progress and connectivity throughout its rich history.
