Consecration of the St. Pancras and Islington Extra-Mural Cemetery, Finchley-Road... 1854. Creator: Unknown
Consecration of the St. Pancras and Islington Extra-Mural Cemetery, Finchley-Road, on Tuesday - Procession to the Episcopal Chapel, 1854. The grounds consist of eighty eight acres, tastefully laid out...In the division of the ground for the purposes of interment, St. Pancras possesses fifty acres, and St. Mary, Islington, thirty acres...The only division distinguishing the boundary of the ground belonging to the two parishes is by iron posts and chains; giving the impression that the whole of the ground is one large cemetery...The Episcopal chapel stands upon a considerable elevation: it is of Kentish rag and Bath stone; and is of the Gothic and Early Decorated character, cruciform, and finished with a tower and spire, about 100 feet in. height: the spire is boldly sculptured, by Farmer, of Lambeth....The architects of the whole are Messrs. Barnett and Birch, of Gray's-inn; the contractor, Mr. Dent'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment of the consecration of the St. Pancras and Islington Extra-Mural Cemetery in Finchley-Road, London, in 1854. The cemetery, covering a total area of 88 acres, was divided between the parishes of St. Pancras and St. Mary, Islington, with 50 and 30 acres respectively. The boundary between the two parishes was marked only by iron posts and chains, creating an impression of a unified, expansive burial ground. The Episcopal chapel, located on a significant elevation, dominates the scene. Constructed of Kentish rag and Bath stone, it boasts a Gothic and Early Decorated design, featuring a cruciform shape, a tower, and a spire reaching approximately 100 feet in height. The spire, sculpted by Farmer of Lambeth, adds a striking visual element to the chapel. The architects of this magnificent structure were Messrs. Barnett and Birch of Gray's-inn, while the contractor was Mr. Dent. The consecration ceremony, held in 1854, marked a significant milestone in the development of this cemetery, which aimed to provide a peaceful and picturesque resting place for the deceased and their families. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur and intricacy of the chapel, as well as the sense of community and tradition that surrounded the consecration of this historic cemetery.
