Construction of a Bridge 18 Sazhens Long Across the Khilok River on the Povarenskaia Road, 1909. Photographs documenting various stages in the construction of dirt roads in the Tomsk region by workers and engineers of the road-building department of the Russian Resettlement Administration. The albums date from 1906-8 and 1909. The Russian state paid for the construction of roads such as those depicted in the albums in order to connect settlers with a railroad line, a navigable river, or commercial-industrial centers. The overall purpose of the road-building program was to promote the colonization of the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums show the construction of roads in the region between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet and Kandat Rivers in Tomsk gubernia (governorate). EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the construction of a 18 sazhen (approximately 36 meters or 118 feet) long bridge across the Khilok River on the Povarenskaia Road in 1909. The image is part of a series of photographs documenting the various stages of road construction in the Tomsk region, taken by the Dorozhno-Stroitel'nyi Otdel (Construction Department) of the Russian Resettlement Administration. During this period, the Russian government invested in the construction of roads to connect settlers with essential infrastructure such as railways, navigable rivers, or commercial-industrial centers. The road-building program was a crucial aspect of the broader colonization efforts to promote settlement in the taiga (moist coniferous forest regions) of Siberia. The albums from which this photograph is taken date from 1906-1908 and 1909 and depict the construction of roads in the Tomsk gubernia (governorate) between the main line of the Trans-Siberian Railroad and the Chet' and Kandat Rivers. The construction of this bridge over the Khilok River was a significant undertaking, as the river is known for its strong currents and unpredictable flooding. The workers and engineers can be seen carefully constructing the bridge, using wooden planks and other materials to build the foundation and support the structure. The photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, revealing the determination and ingenuity of those who worked to expand Russia's infrastructure and reach into the vast and challenging terrain of Siberia.
