EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, dating back to 1850, showcases the newly constructed Corn Exchange and Market Hall in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England. The vision for this architectural masterpiece was brought to life by the Mayor of Lichfield in 1848, who spearheaded the project and saw it through to completion. The image, as depicted from Tamworth-street, highlights the principal front towards Conduit-street, revealing the Savings-Bank in Bore-street nestled in the background. The Corn Exchange and Market Hall were completed by Messrs. Scott and Collyer, with the design credited to Messrs. Johnson and Son, both of Lichfield. The building is a stunning representation of the Elizabethan style, featuring an extensive arcade that spans the entire length of the principal front, leading into a vast covered market. The upper room, known as the Corn Exchange, is accessed via a grand stone staircase and measures an impressive 63 feet in length and 34 feet in width, with the capacity to accommodate between 600 and 800 people. The intricately detailed design, as captured in this engraving from the Illustrated London News, showcases the grandeur and sophistication of the Victorian era.
