Cossack Girls, 1909. Creator: Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev
Cossack Girls, 1909. This image is from Tipy kazakov: Sibirskie kazaki na sluzhbe i doma (Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home), one of three albums depicting the territories, culture, and way of life of the Cossacks living in the steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. These albums were created for and exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911. The albums were part of a collection of photographs assembled between 1891 and 1918 by the museum of the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographic Society in Omsk. The photographs in the albums were taken in 1909 by N.G. Katanaev (son of Colonel G.E. Katanaev), during a journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai (later the oblasts of Ural'sk, Turgai, Akmola, and Semipalatinsk). Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Cossack Girls, 1909," takes us back in time to the vast steppe regions of western Siberia and present-day Kazakhstan. The image is part of a collection called "Types of Cossacks: Siberian Cossacks on duty and at home," which was exhibited at the First West Siberian Agricultural, Forestry, and Commercial-Industrial Exhibition in Omsk in 1911.
The photograph was taken by Nikolai Georgievich Katanaev during his journey to Cossack settlements in Stepnoi krai. It showcases a group portrait of young girls dressed in traditional attire, their direct gazes capturing our attention. Seated or standing outside a rustic log cabin, these girls exude an air of innocence and curiosity.
Their headscarves and headdresses add a touch of cultural heritage to the scene, reflecting the rich history and traditions of the Slavic people living in this remote region. The simplicity of their surroundings emphasizes their connection with nature and village life.
This still image transports us into a bygone era where time seemed to stand still. It offers glimpses into the daily lives of these Cossack girls – their dreams, aspirations, joys, and challenges within this close-knit community.
Preserved by the Omsk State Museum of Regional History and Folklife as part of its extensive photographic collection from 1891 to 1918 assembled by the museum's branch under Imperial Russian Geographic Society patronage; this print serves as a testament to Russia's diverse cultural tapestry.
Through this photograph captured over a century ago by N.G. Katanaev himself – son Colonel G.E. Katanaev – we are reminded that images have an incredible power not only to document history but also evoke emotions that transcend time itself.
