EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the chaotic aftermath of a coup d'état in Portugal during December 7-8, 1917. The scene unfolds in front of the building of the Democratic newspaper "O Mundo" in Lisbon, Portugal. Revolutionaries, fueled by political unrest, stormed the premises, ransacking the publication and leaving it in ruins. In the foreground, a group of boys and men gather around the charred remains of the newspaper's facade, while in the background, a crowd of civilians, both men and women, look on in disbelief. The event marked a significant turning point in Portuguese politics, as Sidónio Pais, a military officer and politician, seized power in a coup and established a new regime. The image is reminiscent of the Inquisition-era auto-da-fé, a public act of faith and punishment, but here it serves as a symbol of political upheaval and the destruction of the democratic press. This photograph is from "L'Album de la Guerre 1914-1919, Volume 2" by L'Illustration, Paris, 1924.
