The Crystal Palace - the Egyptian Court - Entrance to the Tomb of Beni Hassan, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Crystal Palace - the Egyptian Court - Entrance to the Tomb of Beni Hassan, 1854. Exhibition at Sydenham in south London....we find ourselves in a dark tomb copied from one at Beni Hassan. It is the earliest piece of architecture in the Crystal Palace, its date being about 1660, B.C. The original tomb is cut in a solid chain of rocks that forms a boundary on the east of the Nile, separating the sandy desert from the fertile valley of the river. Although architectural remains exist in Egypt of a much earlier date than this tomb, it still possesses great value to us, for it may be considered as exhibiting the first order of Egyptian columns, which was employed in constructing buildings at as remote a period as two thousand years before Christ; this fluted column in another respect claims our attention, for there can be but little doubt that it supplied the Greeks with the model of their early Doric'. The Crystal Palace: A Journey Through Time - The Egyptian Court and the Entrance to the Tomb of Beni Hassan, 1854 This photograph showcases the Egyptian Court of the Crystal Palace, an architectural marvel of the 19th century, located in Sydenham, south London. The image transports us back in time to an intriguing blend of ancient Egyptian history and Victorian innovation. Upon entering this dark and mysterious chamber, we are transported to the tomb of Beni Hassan, one of Egypt's earliest architectural treasures, dating back to approximately 1660 BC. The original tomb is nestled within a solid chain of rocks that forms the eastern boundary of the Nile, separating the desert from the fertile valley. Although architectural remains in Egypt predate this tomb, it holds significant value for scholars and history enthusiasts alike. It represents the earliest known example of Egyptian columns, which were employed in constructing buildings over two thousand years before Christ. This fluted column, in particular, is noteworthy, as it is believed to have served as the inspiration for the Greeks' early Doric columns. The Illustrated London News, in its 1854 edition, described the Crystal Palace's Egyptian Court as "the earliest piece of architecture in the Crystal Palace." This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, inviting us to explore the rich history of ancient Egypt and the enduring influence of its architectural innovations.
