Cupid Advises Calypso to Set Fire to Mentor's Ship
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating pen and ink drawing by the Italian artist Bartolomeo Pinelli, created in 1808. This masterpiece is a visual interpretation of an event from Book 7 of The Adventures of Telemachus, a work based on Homer's Odyssey. In Greek mythology, Calypso, a nymph, had kept Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, on her island for years, away from the dangers of the sea. Telemachus' mentor, Mentor, disguised as Athena, had come to the island to guide him back home. Calypso, however, was enamored with Telemachus and, upon the advice of Cupid, decided to set fire to Mentor's ship to keep her beloved from leaving. Pinelli's drawing beautifully captures this intriguing moment. The image is dominated by the figure of Cupid, who, with a knowing smile, advises Calypso. She is shown holding a torch, ready to set the ship ablaze, while the figure of Mentor, in the background, looks on in shock as the flames begin to consume his vessel. The scene is set against a grey and brown backdrop, with smoke rising from the burning ship and the water transport in the foreground adding a sense of urgency and movement. Pinelli's use of pen and black ink with brush and brown and gray wash over traces of black chalk on ivory laid paper laid down on board creates a rich texture and depth, bringing the characters and their emotions to life. This stunning work of art, a testament to Pinelli's skill and creativity, is now part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, where it continues to inspire and captivate visitors.
