The Dalada as it is exhibited for the worship of the Cinghalese, 1876. Creator: Unknown

The Dalada as it is exhibited for the worship of the Cinghalese, 1876. The tooth relic has a long and eventful history, which includes the strong probability that it is not even the tooth which it pretends to be, and that it could not, from its size and appearance be the tooth of Buddha, or of any human being...The Cinghalese believe that when the Portuguese scattered the dust of the tooth that Buddha himself, by his divine power, gathered all the particles together again, and that they were discovered in their previous form of the tooth, preserved in the centre of a budding lotus...Buddha was, at least so the Cinghalese Buddhists believe, 27 ft. in height, and it would have required such a man to have a dental bone of the dimensions of the Dalada. It is about 1½ in. in length, and looks like a bit of bone, or old ivory...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1876

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Dalada, or the Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha, is exhibited with great reverence and devotion among the Cinghalese people of Sri Lanka in 1876, as depicted in this historic photograph from the Illustrated London News. The tooth relic is believed to have a long and intriguing history, with doubts surrounding its authenticity, as some believe it may not even be the original tooth. According to the Cinghalese faith, when the Portuguese destroyed the temple housing the relic in 1544, the tooth was scattered, and Buddha, by his divine power, gathered all the particles together and reformed it into its original shape, preserved in the center of a budding lotus. Buddha, as the Cinghalese Buddhists believe, was at least 27 feet in height, and it is assumed that such a man would have had a dental bone of the dimensions of the Dalada. The tooth relic is approximately 1½ inches in length and resembles a piece of bone or old ivory. The Dalada is housed in the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and is considered one of the most significant tourist attractions and religious sites in the country. This engraved print, from the Illustrated London News, showcases the Dalada as it was exhibited for the worship of the Cinghalese people during the 19th century. The print offers a fascinating glimpse into the deep-rooted faith and beliefs of the Sri Lankan people and the significance of the Dalada in their religious and cultural heritage.
