EDITORS COMMENTS
The Death of the Prince d Orange, Florence, Italy, 1530 (1882-1884) captures a pivotal moment in history through the skilled artistry of Frederic Lix. Philibert of Chalon, Prince of Orange, stands as a commanding figure leading the armies of Charles V during the Italian Wars. However, tragedy strikes as he falls victim to mortal wounds during the Siege of Florence. This poignant print depicts the aftermath of battle and showcases the chaos and sorrow that war brings. French soldiers tend to their fallen commander with great care and concern while others continue fighting in the background. The monochrome engraving adds depth and intensity to this somber scene. The Siege of Florence not only marked an end to the War of League Cognac but also signaled a significant shift in power dynamics within Italy. As Alessandro de Medici is installed as Duke of Florence after its fall, it symbolizes both victory for some and loss for others. Frederic Lix's attention to detail allows us to witness this historical event from centuries ago with vivid clarity. Through his masterful technique and composition, we are transported back to 16th-century Lombardy where bravery clashed with mortality on blood-soaked battlefields.
