The Death of the Virgin, 1510. Creator: Albrecht Dürer (German, 1471-1528)
The Death of the Virgin, 1510. Durer depicted the scene of the Virgins death (1959.99.18) as an intimate one, with the apostles keeping vigil around her deathbed. Three days later they witnessed Marys bodily assumption into paradise where she was crowned the Queen of Heaven (1959.99.19). The final print (1959.99.20), which some believe was conceived independently from the series because it falls outside of the typical narrative, shows the Virgin in a domestic setting surrounded by several saints, angels, and putti that celebrate her life-an especially fitting way to end the series

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating woodcut print created by Albrecht Dürer, a renowned German artist from the Renaissance period. In this poignant artwork, Dürer portrays an intimate scene surrounding the deathbed of the Virgin Mary. The apostles are depicted solemnly keeping vigil as they witness her passing. The series continues with "Three days later" where Mary's bodily assumption into paradise takes place. This momentous event sees her being crowned as the Queen of Heaven. The final print in this series showcases a domestic setting, deviating slightly from the typical narrative. Here, we see the Virgin surrounded by saints, angels, and putti who joyously celebrate her life. Dürer's attention to detail and masterful technique shine through in these prints. Each figure is meticulously rendered with intricate lines and delicate shading that bring them to life on paper. This particular print captures not only Dürer's artistic brilliance but also serves as a testament to his deep religious devotion. It allows us to appreciate his ability to convey profound emotions through his art. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this woodcut print stands as a remarkable example of Dürer's contribution to German Renaissance art. Its historical significance and aesthetic beauty make it an invaluable piece within Heritage Art/Heritage Images' collection.
