EDITORS COMMENTS
A poignant moment in history: The Departure of Lieutenant-General Sir Duncan Cameron from Auckland, New Zealand (1865). As he bid farewell to his troops and the people of Auckland, a sense of nostalgia and appreciation fills the air. This engraving by C.R., based on a photograph by J.N. Crombie, captures the emotional depth of this momentous occasion. Sir Duncan Cameron's departure from New Zealand marked the end of an era in military leadership during the Maori war. His resignation was due to disputes with colonial administrators over the conduct of the conflict. Despite these challenges, his public and private character were widely admired by those who knew him. In this photograph, Sir Cameron stands proudly alongside his niece, Mrs. Leveson Gower, as he receives a farewell address from Mr. Macfarlane on behalf of the people of Auckland. The crowd's enthusiastic cheers for Her Majesty Queen Victoria, General Cameron himself, and Mrs. Leveson Gower attest to their deep respect and admiration. This historic moment is preserved in this beautiful engraving, offering us a glimpse into the lives of those who shaped New Zealand's past.
