EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant historical artifact - documents signed by King Charles I in the year 1641. The artist, King Charles I himself, meticulously penned these papers which hold immense importance during the turbulent times of the English Civil War. The documents pertain to instructions given to Sir Edward Herbert, Attorney General, regarding the impeachment of Viscount Mandeville (Lord Kimbolton) and the Five Members. The erasures on these papers reveal that initially it was intended for Mandeville to be called as a witness rather than facing full impeachment. Dated 3rd January 1641, they shed light on the political maneuverings and strategies employed during this period of unrest. Another document included in this print is a warrant issued by King Charles I to Sir E Herbert instructing him to cease further proceedings on the aforementioned impeachment. This warrant was issued from Theobalds on 3rd March 1641. These facsimiles are part of a series compiled in London in 1899 featuring royal autographs housed within the Department of Manuscripts at the British Museum. Through this photo print, we gain insight into not only historical events but also into King Charles I's handwriting and signature. Overall, this image serves as a visual testament to an era marked by political strife and conflict while offering us glimpses into both legal procedures and monarchical power dynamics during seventeenth-century England.
