Door of Upton Church, Bucks. 1850. Creator: Unknown
Door of Upton Church, Buckinghamshire, 1850. 12th-century Norman door at St Laurence's Church, Upton-cum-Chalvey. Of late years, many appeals have been made to the public in aid of the restoration of certain of our ancient churches, which, from various causes, have fallen into decay. An effort is now making to extend this restorative hand to the fine old Norman church of Upton, near Eton...its architecture is so ancient and so beautiful, and the groined roof of its chancel so much to be admired, that it is hoped a sufficient sum may be raised to complete the necessary restoration...The Church (which is the parish church of Slough) is a very small but interesting edifice; and, with the exception of the porch and upper stage of the tower, is of Norman architecture. The exterior has no pretension to enrichment, save the elegant doorway forming the entrance to the nave...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1850, showcases the Door of Upton Church in Buckinghamshire, England. The image, which is believed to be from the Illustrated London News, highlights the appeal made to the public for the restoration of ancient churches, including this fine Norman church in Upton-cum-Chalvey. The church, which serves as the parish church of Slough, is a small but significant edifice, with the exception of the porch and upper stage of the tower, dating back to the 12th century. The exterior of the church boasts no grand embellishments, save for the elegant and intricately decorated doorway leading into the nave. The Norman architecture is evident in the arched doorway, with its decorative dogtooth and zigzag patterns, and the engraved arch above. The groined roof of the chancel is also a notable architectural feature, making this church a must-see for those interested in history and architecture. The photograph, taken over 170 years ago, offers a glimpse into the past and the importance placed on preserving these ancient structures for future generations.
