EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the esteemed Dr. TW Evans, an American dentist and biographer of Napoleon III, during the 19th century. Dr. Evans' remarkable journey began when he first treated Louis-Napoleon, who would later become Emperor Napoleon III, in 1850 while he was still President of the French Second Republic. Impressed by his skills and expertise, Louis-Napoleon appointed Dr. Evans as his official dentist, making him the first American to receive such an honor and be admitted to the prestigious Legion d'Honneur. This portrait showcases a distinguished man dressed in a suit with a prominent set of whiskers that were fashionable during that era. Dr. Evans played a crucial role in history when he facilitated the escape of Empress Eugenie to England after Napoleon's army suffered defeat at Sedan and the Second Empire was overthrown in 1870. His experiences alongside Napoleon III inspired him to write his memoirs titled "Memoirs of Dr Thomas W Evans: The Second French Empire" providing invaluable insights into this significant period. The photograph is part of Album de Photographies dans L'Intimite de Personnages Illustres from 1865-1905, capturing iconic individuals throughout history. It serves as a testament to Dr. TW Evan's achievements as both a respected dentist and author whose contributions have left an indelible mark on both dentistry and historical literature.
