EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the distinguished figure of Dr William Hunter, a renowned Scottish anatomist and obstetrician. Captured in 1870 by artist S Freeman, this portrait immortalizes Dr Hunter's significant contributions to the field of medicine during the 18th and 19th centuries. Dr Hunter, elder brother to the esteemed surgeon John Hunter, held prestigious positions throughout his career. He served as Physician Extraordinary to Queen Charlotte from 1764 onwards and established his own school of anatomy in Covent Garden, London. In recognition of his expertise, he became the first Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy in 1768 and was appointed President of the Medical Society in 1781. The engraving featured here is extracted from Robert Chambers' A Biographical Dictionary of Eminent Scotsmen published by Blackie and Son in 1870. It beautifully captures Dr Hunter's dignified presence as well as his commitment to advancing medical knowledge. With its monochrome aesthetic that adds an air of timelessness, this print transports us back to an era when scientific exploration flourished. It serves as a tribute not only to Dr William Hunter but also to Scotland's rich history in producing exceptional minds dedicated to pushing boundaries within their respective fields. *Note: This caption does not imply any commercial use or affiliation with specific entities mentioned. *
