EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the annals of Channel Islands history, as The Duke of Cambridge, then serving as General Commanding-in-Chief, embarks on an official visit in 1862. The image, taken at St. Peter Port, Guernsey, showcases the vibrant reception awaiting the senior royal. The landing site and quay are adorned with a grand display of flags, including the Royal Standard, signifying the royal visit. A guard of honor, comprised of fifty men from the Royal Artillery and two companies of the 1st Regiment of Royal Guernsey Militia, are stationed near the landing stage. The constables, Douzeniers, and local police of the town parish also join the scene, adding to the sense of anticipation. The steam yacht 'Vivid' is seen anchored in the roadstead, and the Duke and his suite make their way to the landing-place in two of the yacht's boats. Upon arrival, they are warmly welcomed by the Lieutenant Governor, who extends a courteous reception. The troops salute, and the bands of the town regiment and Royal Artillery play the first bars of the National Anthem, eliciting hearty cheers from the large assemblage. The Duke, accompanied by one of his Aides-de-Camp and General Slade, then enters the Lieutenant-Governor's carriage and is driven to his Excellency's residence at Castle Carey. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the pomp and pageantry of a royal visit to the Channel Islands over a century and a half ago.
