The Duke of Devonshire, 1862. Creator: Unknown
The Duke of Devonshire, 1862. The recent election of the Duke of Devonshire to the office of Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, vacant by the decease of the Prince Consort, has caused us to engrave a Portrait of his Grace...from a photograph by Maull and Polyblank. William Cavendish, seventh Duke of Devonshire, Marquis of Hartington, Earl of Devonshire, Earl of Burlington, Baron Cavendish, and Baron Clifford, K.G. F.R.S. D.C.L. is the eldest son of the late Hon. William Cavendish...The position held by his Grace as a member of the University of Cambridge, and his having occupied an office akin to that to which he has just been appointed, give a certain fitness to the selection which has been made by the authorities of the University, and probably tended to bis election being unopposed. His Grace was also M.P. for the University of Cambridge in 1829 and 1830, previous to his accession to the peerage...In 1832 he was elected for North Derbyshire, which division of the county he represented until 1834, when he succeeded to the earldom of Burlington. In 1858 he was created a Knight of the Garter'. From "Illustrated London News", 1862

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken by Maull and Polyblank in 1862, we find a portrait of the esteemed Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish (1808-1891). The Duke had recently been elected as the Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, an office that had become vacant following the death of the Prince Consort. Born as the eldest son of the late Hon. William Cavendish, the Duke of Devonshire held numerous titles, including Marquis of Hartington, Earl of Devonshire, Earl of Burlington, Baron Cavendish, and Baron Clifford. He was also a Knight of the Garter, a Fellow of the Royal Society, and held the degree of Doctor of Civil Law from the University of Cambridge. The Duke's connection to the University of Cambridge, as well as his previous tenure as a member of the institution in the 1820s, made him a fitting choice for the position of Chancellor. His election was unopposed, likely due in part to his distinguished background and accomplishments. Prior to his time at Cambridge, the Duke represented North Derbyshire in Parliament from 1832 to 1834. It was during this period that he succeeded to the earldom of Burlington, which marked the end of his political career in the House of Commons. The Duke's impressive resume and ties to the University of Cambridge made him an ideal candidate for the role of Chancellor. This photograph, taken during his tenure, captures the Duke's regal presence and the dignity that came with his many titles and accomplishments.
