The Durham Monument, 1844. The Penshaw Monument in Sunderland, County Durham, was built to commemorate John Lambton, 1st Earl of Durham, Governor-General of British North America. The design, by the Messrs. [John and Benjamin] Green, is in the form of a Temple, of the Doric order, and the proportions are after the Temple of Theseus.
