EDITORS COMMENTS
Dwelling at Unalaska, Aleutian Islands, 19th Century: A Window into the Past This black and white lithograph, titled "Dwelling at Unalaska, Aleutian Islands," is an intriguing glimpse into the past. Created by a team of renowned European explorers and artists – Friedrich Heinrich Kittlitz, Victor Adam, Godefroy Engelmann, and Leon Jean-Baptiste Sabatier – this image is one of 65 lithographs included in the volume of maps published after the historic round-the-world voyage of the Russian corvette Seniavin. Commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I and led by Captain Fedor Litke, the expedition began in Kronstadt, Russia, and traveled around Cape Horn to the Pacific Ocean. This voyage was part of a series of scientific naval surveys carried out by Russia in the first half of the 19th century. The lithograph depicts a traditional Aleutian dwelling nestled among the rugged terrain and mountains of Unalaska Island. The image captures the meeting of frontiers as European explorers encountered the local indigenous people and their unique way of life. The dwelling, a mud hut, is shown with its door open, revealing a peek inside. Women and children are seen in the background, going about their daily activities. The image provides a fascinating insight into the lives of the indigenous people of the Aleutian Islands during the 19th century. The lithograph is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and history of the Aleutian Islands, which were later sold to the United States as part of the Alaska Purchase in 1867. This beautiful work of art, created by the skilled hands of Kittlitz, Adam, Engelmann, and Sabatier, continues to captivate and inspire viewers today.
