EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph print captures the essence of Thomas William Anson, the 1st Earl of Lichfield, in all his regal splendor. Created by Richard James Lane in 1839, this portrait showcases Anson's distinguished features and commanding presence. Anson was not only a prominent figure in British politics but also held prestigious positions within the royal household. Serving as Postmaster General and a British Whig politician under Lord Grey and Lord Melbourne, he later became Master of the Buckhounds. This role placed him at the heart of the equestrian department, responsible for overseeing matters related to horses within the British Royal Household. However, despite his esteemed status, Anson faced financial difficulties due to his extravagant lifestyle and gambling habits. Ultimately forced to sell off everything from his Shugborough Hall estate to settle mounting debts, this portrait serves as a poignant reminder of both his grandeur and downfall. The image is part of "Portraits by Count D'Orsay" an album meticulously assembled by Lady Georgiana Codrington during the 1850s. Count Alfred D'Orsay himself was renowned as a courtier and artist during that era. Through this striking portrayal captured over two centuries ago, we catch a glimpse into the life of an influential man whose fortunes rose high but ultimately fell victim to personal vices.
