The Earl of Mar's Council of War, November 1715
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a significant moment in Scottish history - the Earl of Mar's Council of War in November 1715. John Erskine, the Earl of Mar, stands tall and resolute at the center, surrounded by his loyal supporters as they strategize their rebellion against King George I. Depicted in black and white, this monochrome image adds an air of gravitas to the scene. The men are dressed in traditional Scottish attire, proudly wearing kilts and brandishing swords. Their raised arms and intense hand gestures convey their determination to fight for their cause. The location is believed to be Sheriffmuir, where a decisive battle took place between Mars' forces and those loyal to the Hanoverians. Despite outnumbering his opponent, victory eluded him on that fateful day. This historic photograph is part of James Grant's renowned book "British Battles on Land and Sea" published around 1880.
