Six early forms of bicycles and tricycles, 19th century
Six early forms of bicycles and tricycles, 19th century. The cycles shown are the Otto Dicycle, the Rover Safety, Singers Special Safety, the King of Clubs, the Humber Tricycle and Singers Straight Steerer convertible. The Dicycle consists of two parallel wheels, with the saddle between them. The Rover and Singers Special Safety show the return to a design based on two wheels of the same size, however, although safer, they were still far more uncomfortable than the high-wheel bicycles. The King of Clubs had solid rubber tyres and provided a smoother ride, they were a success with affluent young men and had their hey-day in the 1880s

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases six early forms of bicycles and tricycles from the 19th century. Each cycle represents a unique innovation in transportation, reflecting the evolving concept of mobility during that era. The Otto Dicycle takes center stage, featuring two parallel wheels with a saddle positioned between them. This design demonstrates an early attempt to create a balanced and efficient mode of transport. Moving on, we encounter the Rover Safety and Singers Special Safety bicycles, which reintroduced the use of two wheels of equal size for enhanced stability. Although these designs were safer than their predecessors, they still lacked comfort compared to later high-wheel bicycles. One standout among these historical cycles is the King of Clubs, renowned for its solid rubber tires that provided a smoother ride. These luxurious bikes gained popularity among affluent young men and experienced their peak in the 1880s. Through this monochrome image, we are transported back to an era when wheel-based transportation was undergoing rapid transformation. The Humber Tricycle and Singers Straight Steerer convertible complete this fascinating collection, further exemplifying the diverse range of innovations present during this time period. This print serves as a testament to human ingenuity in developing new means of travel throughout history while also highlighting how far bicycle technology has come since these early prototypes were introduced over a century ago.
