Early pyramidal headdress, late 15th-early 16th century, (1910)

Early pyramidal headdress, late 15th-early 16th century, (1910). The pyramidal headdress developed from the broad band of the steeple headdress. It rested on the forehead and fell on either side of the face. Subsequently this developed into a simple hood. Here the lady wears a piece of reticulated wire-work enclosing the hair, while over it the headdress bears a resemblance to the earlier capuchon, with the front thrown back to show the inner lining. One of the men wears large and flamboyant feathers in his hat. Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an early pyramidal headdress from the late 15th to early 16th century. The headdress, which evolved from the steeple headdress, was worn by women during this period. It elegantly rested on the forehead and cascaded down both sides of the face, creating a striking silhouette. In this particular image, we see a lady adorned with a piece of reticulated wire-work that encloses her hair. Over it, she wears the pyramidal headdress that bears resemblance to the earlier capuchon style, with its front thrown back to reveal its inner lining. The intricate design of the wire-work adds a touch of geometric elegance to her overall appearance. Accompanying her is a man wearing an extravagant hat embellished with large and flamboyant feathers. This accessory adds flair and grandeur to his ensemble, complementing his medieval attire. The photograph captures not only the fashion trends but also provides us with glimpses into English society during this era. It transports us back in time as we observe these individuals dressed in their finest garments against a backdrop reminiscent of medieval England. This remarkable image is part of "British Costume during 19 Centuries" by Mrs Charles H Ashdown (London, 1910), showcasing Emily Jessie Ashdown's talent for capturing historical fashion through her lens.
