EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned English physician, Edward Jenner, vaccinating his own son in 1796. Created by Italian artist Giulio Monteverde around 1900, this colorized artwork brings to life an original sculpture depicting a pivotal moment in medical history. Edward Jenner, practicing as a country doctor in Gloucestershire, made a groundbreaking discovery that immunity to smallpox could be achieved through cow-pox. In this image, he is seen administering the vaccine to his son James Phipps multiple times using pus from cow-pox pustules obtained from a dairy maid. Following these vaccinations, young James was then inoculated with smallpox and experienced only mild illness before making a full recovery. Jenner's pioneering work revolutionized the field of medicine and laid the foundation for modern vaccination practices. His dedication to scientific research and commitment to public health saved countless lives and led him to become one of Britain's most famous physicians. The bronze sculpture captured here highlights not only Jenner's role as a scientist but also emphasizes his role as a father and family man. It serves as a powerful reminder of how personal experiences can drive remarkable advancements in science and medicine. As we admire this extraordinary piece of artistry, let us recognize Edward Jenner's immense contribution towards eradicating smallpox and protecting future generations from deadly diseases through vaccination.
