Edward Winslows visit to Massasoit, 17th century (c1880)
Edward Winslows visit to Massasoit, 17th century (c1880). Winslow (1595-1655) was one of the Pilgrim Fathers who arrived aboard the Mayflower in 1620 to establish the colony of New Plymouth in Massachusetts. Massasoit was the sachem (chief) of the Native American Pokanoket tribe, and leader of a tribal grouping known as the Wampanoag Confederacy. Winslow was charged with treating with the local natives and established friendly relations with Massasoit, which assisted the colonists in avoiding starvation in the difficult early years of their time in America. A print from Cassells History of the United States, by Edmund Ollier, Volume I, Cassell Petter and Galpin, London, c1880

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in American history - Edward Winslow's visit to Massasoit in the 17th century. Edward Winslow, one of the Pilgrim Fathers who arrived aboard the Mayflower in 1620, played a crucial role in establishing friendly relations with Massasoit, the sachem of the Native American Pokanoket tribe. In this image, we see Winslow dressed in traditional English attire, standing tall and confident beside Massasoit. The two leaders are engaged in a respectful greeting, symbolizing their efforts to bridge cultural divides and establish peaceful coexistence between the colonists and Native Americans. Winslow's diplomatic skills were instrumental in helping the struggling Plymouth colony survive its early years. By forging an alliance with Massasoit and his Wampanoag Confederacy, he ensured that both groups could benefit from mutual cooperation rather than conflict. The print itself is an engraving from Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier. It beautifully captures this historic encounter with intricate detail and monochrome elegance. This image serves as a reminder of how different cultures can come together for common goals despite their differences. As we reflect on this photograph, let us remember Edward Winslow's legacy as a peacemaker and advocate for understanding between settlers and indigenous peoples during America's formative years.
