Election of Rabbi, at the Synagogue, Great St. Helen s, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Election of Rabbi, at the Synagogue, Great St. Helen s, 1844. Scene at Bishopsgate Street, City of London, when the Reverend Doctor Nathan Marcus Adler was chosen as Orthodox Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. A multitude was present. A din of strange sounds saluted our ear...A strong eastern character was stamped on every countenance. Every man was recognised as a foreigner, and felt to be a Jew...every one spoke of Dr. Adler in terms of kindness. He was said to be a learned man, strongly given to philosophic inquiry, and more deeply affected with the spirituality of religious observances than is usual with the Jews. A revival and a change was therefore looked for, and in that hope we left the company, but not without fear, when, in parting, we learned that the new Rabbi, who lives at Hanover, is under the special patronage of King Ernest. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in history - the Election of Rabbi at the Synagogue, Great St. Helen's, in 1844. The scene unfolds on Bishopsgate Street in the City of London, where a multitude has gathered to witness the selection of the Orthodox Chief Rabbi of the British Empire. The atmosphere is filled with strange sounds and an unmistakable eastern character permeates every countenance. In this image, we see men from all walks of life coming together as foreigners but united by their Jewish heritage. They speak kindly about Dr. Adler, who is described as a learned man deeply engaged in philosophical inquiry and profoundly connected to religious observances beyond what is typical among Jews. The anticipation for change and revival hangs palpably in the air as people bid farewell to one another with both hope and fear. It becomes known that Dr. Adler resides in Hanover under King Ernest's special patronage, adding an intriguing political dimension to his appointment. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" provides us with a glimpse into Victorian Britain's diverse religious landscape and underscores Judaism's place within it. The neo-classical architecture surrounding this historic event adds grandeur to an already monumental occasion. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of artistry captured by an unknown creator, we are reminded that even centuries ago, religion played a vital role in shaping society while individuals like Dr. Nathan Marcus Adler left indelible marks on their communities through their leadership and commitment to spiritual exploration.
