Elizabethan carriage, c1950. Creator: Shirley Markham
Elizabethan carriage, c1950. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite Elizabethan carriage, beautifully captured by the talented artist Shirley Markham in the 1950s. Markham, a gifted illustrator and graphic designer, honed her skills at the prestigious Central School of Art in London under the guidance of renowned writer and artist Mervyn Peake. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, Markham developed a unique style that effortlessly blended classical elegance with contemporary flair. During her time in Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome, Markham drew inspiration from the grandeur of classical architecture as she sketched magnificent buildings. After graduating from Central School of Art, she embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer, lending her artistic touch to book illustrations, comic cartoons, menus, and programs. However promising her professional journey seemed to be, societal expectations prevailed when Markham married in 1957. Middle-class women were often encouraged to focus solely on domestic responsibilities rather than pursuing their creative passions. Despite possessing undeniable talent and potential for greatness in illustration artistry; unfortunately lacked confidence to return to this field. For many years following her departure from professional work; Markham's remarkable portfolio remained tucked away in the family attic until now. Today marks an exciting milestone as we proudly unveil these previously unseen works for all to appreciate - a testament not only to Shirley Markham's exceptional skill but also to countless other women whose talents have been overshadowed by societal norms throughout history.
