Embarkation of Cattle, at Trieste for the Auxiliary Army in the East, 1854. Creator: Unknown
Embarkation of Cattle, at Trieste for the Auxiliary Army in the East, 1854. Scene from the Crimean War. Our Artistic Correspondent writes from Trieste [in Italy], June 28th: "Upwards of 12, 000 oxen have been bought already in this neighbourhood, chiefly in Friuli, for the Allied French and English Armies. During the last fortnight a large number of vessels have left this port for Gallipoli, laden with first-rate cattle. The accompanying Sketch represents the scene of shipping the oxen. They are first placed on large flats, provided for the purpose; and, after being towed alongside, are hoisted into the vessels with slings, in the usual manner. The vessels destined for this service are easily distinguished by a large letter and number painted near the stern'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Embarkation of Cattle at Trieste for the Auxiliary Army in the East, 1854: A Scene from the Crimean War This evocative black and white print depicts the bustling activity at the port of Trieste, Italy, during the Crimean War. Our Artistic Correspondent reports from the scene, "Upwards of 12,000 oxen have been bought already in this neighbourhood, chiefly in Friuli," he writes, "during the last fortnight a large number of vessels have left this port for Gallipoli, laden with first-rate cattle." The image captures the moment as the cattle are loaded onto large flat barges, towed alongside the ships, and hoisted in using slings. The vessels, easily distinguished by a large letter and number painted near the stern, are filled to capacity with the valuable livestock, destined to provide meat and other essential supplies to the Allied French and English Armies in the East. The scene at Trieste was a crucial part of the logistical efforts to support the troops during the Crimean War. The port of Trieste, located in the region of Friuli, Venezia Giulia, Italy, was a vital hub for the transportation of supplies and troops to the conflict zone. The image captures the sense of urgency and the sheer scale of the operation, with men working together to ensure the safe and efficient loading of the cattle. The print, from the Illustrated London News, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a snapshot of life during the Crimean War and the vital role that Trieste played in the war effort. The image is a testament to the importance of water transport in the 19th century and the logistical challenges faced in supplying armies in distant locations. The print also highlights the crucial role that livestock played in providing sustenance and energy for the troops, making this an important historical record of the era.
