The Embarkation of Prince Alfred on board the "Euryalus" on Wednesday week, 1858. Creator: Unknown. The Embarkation of Prince Alfred on board the "Euryalus" on Wednesday week, 1858. Creator: Unknown

The Embarkation of Prince Alfred on board the "Euryalus" on Wednesday week - from a sketch by V. Jones, 1858. Naval cadet Alfred, accompanied by his father Prince Albert, is introduced to the (Royal Navy) service and makes his first voyage to sea. On approaching the Euryalus that ship manned yards, as did Rear-Admiral t'Hooft's Dutch squadron, and a grand general salute followed. Prince Albert and Prince Alfred were received by Captain Tarleton and the full staff of the ship with all the honours due to Royalty, and entertained by him at luncheon in the state cabin...The young Prince appeared in good spirits, and was quickly at home with the young gentlemen serving in the frigate...it may be interesting to those young gentlemen who are studying to enter the navy, and others already admitted and serving, to know that Prince Alfred will enjoy no immunity from his Royal rank-that his outfit is no better nor more extensive than theirs. The Prince slings his hammock on the lower deck and berths himself therein the same as the other cadets...Our Sketch...was taken when the Dutch Admiral was making a complimentary speech to the Prince Consort on Prince Alfred joining the navy. Prince Alfred stands between the Prince of Wales and his father'. From "Illustrated London News", 1858

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in the life of Prince Alfred, the second eldest son of Queen Victoria, as he embarks on his first voyage to sea aboard the Royal Navy frigate, Euryalus, in 1858. Accompanied by his father, Prince Albert, the young prince was introduced to naval life and began his cadetship. The scene is depicted from a sketch by V. Jones, published in the Illustrated London News, and shows the grandeur of the occasion. As the Euryalus prepared to set sail, the ship's yards were manned, and a salute was fired in honor of the royal visitors. Prince Albert and Prince Alfred were welcomed aboard by Captain Tarleton and received a luncheon in the state cabin. Despite his royal status, Prince Alfred was treated no differently than the other cadets. He slung his hammock on the lower deck and berths himself there, demonstrating his commitment to the naval life. In the photograph, Prince Alfred stands proudly between his father and the Prince of Wales, as the Dutch Admiral pays a complimentary speech to Prince Albert. This image offers a unique glimpse into the life of a young royal and the rigorous training of a naval cadet. It is a testament to the shared experience of those who serve in the military and the enduring bond between the monarchy and the armed forces.
