The Emperor leaving Calais Harbour, to visit the English Squadron, 1854. French emperor and president Napoleon Bonaparte III inspects Royal Navy ships off the coast of France before they leave for the Crimean War....as the Emperor stood on the deck of the round-house of the yacht in which he visited the fleet, he was greeted with frequent manifestations of loyalty. He now appeared to greater advantage both as to health and spirits. The same remarks are applicable to his inspection of the troops'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a historic moment in 19th century European history, as French Emperor Napoleon III, played by Charles Louis Napoléon Bonaparte, bids farewell to Calais Harbour en route to visit the English Squadron stationed off the coast of France, in preparation for the Crimean War. The image, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, depicts the Emperor standing confidently on the deck of a round-house yacht, surrounded by the vast expanse of the English Channel. The Royal Navy ships, anchored in the background, await the arrival of their esteemed guest. Napoleon III, who assumed the throne in 1852, is shown in fine form, both in health and spirits, as he inspects the British fleet. The French Emperor's visit to the English Squadron was an important gesture of diplomacy, aimed at strengthening the alliance between France and Britain against the backdrop of the Crimean War. The photograph, reminiscent of an engraving, evokes a sense of grandeur and historical significance. The black-and-white image, with its focus on the Emperor and the ships, offers a glimpse into the geopolitical landscape of the time. The image is a testament to the power and influence of the press, as it was disseminated through newspapers like the Illustrated London News, allowing the public to witness and engage with significant events unfolding across the European continent.
