English Encampment on the Coast near Toula, in the Crimea, 1854. Creator: Smyth
English Encampment on the Coast near Toula, in the Crimea, 1854. Crimean War: British military camp at the time the Battle of the Alma was fought. Captain Monck, of the 7th Fusiliers, was shot by a wounded Russian, to whom he was giving some water. Captain Dew was killed by a cannon-ball - his head cut clean off; Lieut. Cockerell was wounded in the leg by a shot which had passed through his horse; it was amputated, and he died. He was a splendid fellow. Lieut. Walsham, who ascended Mont Blanc, fell most gloriously. A gunner, who was sponging a gun, being shot in the arm, Walsham said to him, "Go at once to the rear - to the doctor"; and not wishing to lose time, he took his place at the gun, and was shot while sponging it'. After a sketch by Lieutenant Bredin of the Royal Artillery. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative black and white image, titled 'English Encampment on the Coast near Toula, in the Crimea, 1854,' captures the raw intensity of the Crimean War as British troops prepare for battle. The scene is set on the shores of the River Alma, with tents pitched haphazardly among the rocks and soldiers readying their weapons. The ominous presence of naval ships in the background underscores the military's strategic position and the impending conflict. The caption accompanying this print offers a poignant account of the sacrifices made during the Battle of the Alma, which took place on September 20, 1854. Notable losses include Captain Monck of the 7th Fusiliers, who was shot by a wounded Russian soldier, and Lieutenant Cockerell, who was killed by a cannonball while attending to his horse. Another casualty, Lieutenant Walsham, demonstrated remarkable bravery by taking the place of a wounded gunner and was tragically shot while sponging the gun. The sketch on which this print is based was created by Lieutenant Edgar G. Bredin of the Royal Artillery and first published in the Illustrated London News in 1854. This powerful image serves as a testament to the courage and resilience of the soldiers involved in the Crimean War, as well as the human cost of conflict.
